Day Twelve

Karl's time on the Rock River is nearly at an end.  He made his final portage today and lies just a few miles away from the confluence with the Mississippi.  Characteristic of his desire to remain near Wisconsin, he is actually north of where he camped last night.  Nico had two half-hour walks this morning.  Needless to say, she was very pleased with the workout.  Hopefully, it means she will stay out of the river this evening.  Karl met a couple of friendly folks out on the river today.  Good people make everything better.  Next stop, Iowa!

  3. Today the TSA decided to pursue a civil lawsuit against a man who was randomly chosen at the San Diego airport for a backscatter body scan. He politely refused (recorded on cell phone cam), stating that he did not know the airport had scanners. He was told it was his duty to be informed before arrival. He asked where he would find this info. He was referred to the airport website, which he searched on the spot with his phone and neither he nor the TSA could find where the info was present on the website (it was later demonstrated conclusively not to be available on the website). . . So he was moved to a 'full body pat down' as an option. He further refused the 'full pat down' where he was informed his naughty areas would be touched. (again recorded, again polite) He was allowed to begin to leave, escorted by police, and then was hauled back and informed he must continue to a full screening. He was informed that he could not enter the airport. He offered to go through the xray and have the wand passed over him. He was declined. He asked politely to leave and was threatened that he would be pursued legally if he did this. He left/was allowed to leave. The TSA logic is that they cannot allow people (all of whom are potential terrorists) to repeatedly attempt to enter the airport and leave once selected for a full scan. Their logic is that you cannot allow repeated attempts at entry until a weakpoint is found. The fallacy here is that they clearly have other ways of monitoring for multiple entry attempts. Anyway - FYI - currently apparently you surrender all rights immediately upon entering the airport, and must be screened or will be sued if you decline. the penalty appears to be $11,000 if you politely refuse to be scanned or patted down and leave the airport.
again - this is the world you left behind.
I envy you. Maybe you should consider trying to connect to the amazon when you are done with ole miss.
My next news bites will be a lighter note - I swear. But this was clearly the news that caught my eye today.
